Cybersecurity has always been both exciting, and a complex topic of discussion. It is also an interesting space. Given the surge in numbers and the level of sophistication of security beaches, security and risk management has become a top issue board-level discussion. The number and sophistication of security breaches is rising, spurring increased legislation to protect consumers and putting security at the forefront of business decisions.
- Is it a cat and mouse game?
- Is it true that the attackers are always ahead of defenders?
- Is cybersecurity getting its due importance in the boardroom?
- Are CISOs appropriately equipped to differentiate between Threat Intelligence and Threat Hunting so that they can hunt the hunters?
There are many such questions that criss-cross during any conversation on cybersecurity. If we talk of past two years, the world has been reeling under a unique global challenge and we are yet not entirely out of the shocks and scars that pandemic left on us. Besides the tragic impact on the humanity, it also propelled enormous amount of malicious cyberattacks and incidents.
Take ransomware for example. It has seen a significant uptick so far in 2021, with global attack volume increasing by 151 percent for the first six months of the year as compared with the year-ago. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) even warns that there are now 100 different strains circulating around the world. A popular estimate suggested that one organization will fall victim to ransomware every 14 seconds in 2019, and every 11 seconds by 2021. Guess that is quite true as we witness the rampage.
Let us digress a little bit and talk about Nation-State Attacks. An independent research conducted by Dr. Mike McGuire, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Surrey highlights a 100% rise in ‘significant’ nation-state incidents between 2017-2020.
In that light, dynamicCISO spoke to Nitin Varma, Managing Director, India & SAARC, CrowdStrike – a cybersecurity leader providing cloud-delivered endpoint and workload protection, on a wide variety of challenges facing the CISOs and CIOs.
